The Gold Standard, Every Time
ASTM C-144 Paver Joint Sand
Why angular joint sand outperforms polymeric sand — the science, the specifications, and the results.
What Is ASTM C-144 Sand?
ASTM C-144 is a specification published by ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) that defines the requirements for aggregate used in masonry mortar and paver joint applications. It specifies grain size distribution, particle shape, mineral composition, and cleanliness standards.
When applied to paver joint sand, ASTM C-144 specifies angular, sharp-edged particles that interlock mechanically when compacted into joints. Unlike round-grain play sand or beach sand, angular particles wedge against each other and against paver edges, creating a dense, stable fill that resists washout, insect intrusion, and weed growth.
The specification requires a graded particle size distribution (from fine to coarse within defined limits) that ensures both density and drainage. The mix of particle sizes fills voids efficiently while still allowing water to percolate through the joint system — a critical function in Florida’s high-rainfall environment.
ASTM C-144 sand is the joint fill material recommended by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) for the vast majority of residential and commercial paver installations. It is the standard we use on every paver restoration project at First Coast Property Experts.
Angular Particle Shape
Sharp-edged, irregular particles interlock mechanically — creating structural stability that round grains cannot achieve.
Graded Size Distribution
Specified blend of fine-to-coarse particles fills voids efficiently while maintaining critical drainage capacity.
ICPI Recommended
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute recommends ASTM C-144 angular sand for residential and commercial applications.
Superior Drainage
Allows water to percolate through joints rather than pooling on the surface — essential in Florida’s 50+ inches of annual rainfall.
ASTM C-144 vs Polymeric Sand
Understanding why we stopped using polymeric sand — and why you should too.
ASTM C-144 Angular Sand
Drainage: Excellent. Water percolates through angular joint fill, reducing surface ponding and hydrostatic pressure beneath pavers.
Efflorescence risk: Zero. Contains no Portland cement or chemical binders that cause white residue.
Repairability: Easy. Individual joints can be topped off or refilled without affecting adjacent areas.
Flexibility: Allows natural thermal expansion/contraction of the paver field without cracking.
Cost: Lower material cost. Standard installation with compaction.
Polymeric Sand
Drainage: Poor. Polymer binder creates a semi-rigid joint that blocks water flow, increasing surface pooling.
Efflorescence risk: High. Contains Portland cement — a documented source of soluble salts that cause white residue on paver faces.
Repairability: Difficult. Failed sections require removal and complete reinstallation. Partial repairs rarely match.
Flexibility: Rigid joints crack under thermal movement, creating gaps that defeat the purpose of the product.
Cost: Higher material cost. Precise activation required — over-wetting causes haze that is difficult to remove.
Proper ASTM C-144 Installation
The sand is only as good as its installation. Here’s the professional process.
Joint Clearing
All old sand, debris, organic material, and failed polymeric sand is removed from joints using specialized vacuum and blowout equipment.
Sand Spreading
ASTM C-144 angular sand is spread across the paver field and swept into joints using push brooms, ensuring full joint penetration.
Mechanical Compaction
A plate compactor with rubber pad is used to vibrate sand deep into joints and compress it to maximum density. This is the critical step most DIYers skip.
Top-Off & Final Sweep
Additional sand is spread to fill any settling from compaction. Final brooming ensures joints are filled to within 1/8″ of the paver surface — the ICPI-recommended level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions answered by our team.
Why is ASTM C-144 sand better than polymeric sand?
ASTM C-144 angular sand provides superior drainage, zero efflorescence risk, easier repairability, and better flexibility than polymeric sand. It is the ICPI-recommended joint fill for most paver installations.
Does ASTM C-144 sand prevent weeds?
Properly compacted angular sand creates a dense joint fill that significantly reduces weed growth. Combined with a breathable sealer that stabilizes the joint surface, weed prevention is excellent — without the drainage problems of polymeric sand.
Will rain wash out ASTM C-144 sand?
When properly compacted and sealed, angular sand is highly resistant to washout. Its interlocking particle structure resists displacement far better than round-grain sand. Some settling is normal in the first few weeks and is easily topped off.
Can ASTM C-144 sand be used with a sealer?
Yes — and this is the recommended combination. A breathable sealer applied over properly installed angular sand stabilizes the joint surface, enhances drainage performance, and extends the service life of both the sand and the sealer.
