Interior Deep Cleaning Checklist for NE Florida Homes
Deep cleaning a home in Northeast Florida isn’t the same as deep cleaning a home in Denver or Detroit. Our climate adds a layer of challenges — persistent humidity, mold-friendly conditions, sand tracked in from the coast, pollen that infiltrates everything, and lanai spaces that blur the line between indoors and out.
This room-by-room checklist covers every surface a thorough deep clean should touch, with Florida-specific items that most generic checklists miss. Whether you’re doing it yourself or hiring a professional residential cleaning team, use this as your standard.
Kitchen
- Degrease range hood, filter, and vent — pull the filter and soak it
- Clean inside oven, including racks and door glass
- Pull out refrigerator; clean behind and underneath (check for mold — Florida humidity makes this a hotspot)
- Clean refrigerator coils to maintain efficiency in our year-round heat
- Wipe down all cabinet fronts, handles, and interior shelves
- Scrub backsplash tile and grout lines
- Sanitize sink, drain, and garbage disposal — run ice and citrus through the disposal
- Clean dishwasher interior, gasket, and filter
- Degrease microwave interior and exterior
- Wipe all countertops, including behind small appliances
- Clean light fixtures and switch plates
- Mop floors, including under the island and in corners
Bathrooms
- Scrub tile and grout in shower/tub — inspect grout for mold penetration (common in Florida’s humidity)
- Clean and descale showerhead
- Wipe down glass shower doors or clean shower curtain and liner
- Sanitize toilet — bowl, base, tank exterior, handle, and behind the toilet
- Clean and polish mirrors and glass
- Wipe all vanity surfaces, drawers, and cabinet interiors
- Check under-sink area for moisture, mold, or leaks — Florida homes are prone to slow leaks that go unnoticed
- Clean exhaust fan cover (critical for humidity control)
- Scrub floor tile and grout on hands and knees — mopping alone doesn’t cut it for deep cleans
- Replace or wash bath mats
Bedrooms
- Strip and wash all bedding, including mattress protector and pillow covers
- Vacuum mattress surface and sides — Florida’s warm, humid air supports dust mites year-round
- Dust ceiling fan blades (both sides) and light fixtures
- Wipe down all furniture surfaces, including nightstands, dressers, and headboard
- Clean mirrors and glass
- Vacuum or mop under the bed and all furniture
- Clean closet shelves, rods, and floor — check for musty smell (humidity indicator)
- Wipe baseboards and door frames
- Clean window sills and tracks — pollen and sand accumulate here fast in NE Florida
- Vacuum or clean window treatments
Living Areas and Common Spaces
- Dust and wipe all ceiling fan blades — every fan in the house, both sides
- Clean all light fixtures, lampshades, and recessed lighting covers
- Dust crown molding, baseboards, and door frames throughout
- Wipe down all furniture, shelving, and entertainment centers
- Vacuum upholstery and under cushions
- Clean all glass, mirrors, and picture frame surfaces
- Vacuum and mop all flooring, including edges and corners
- Clean air vents and return registers — Florida AC systems run 10+ months a year, so vents collect dust fast
- Wipe interior window glass, sills, and tracks
- Clean sliding glass door tracks — sand, dirt, and dead insects collect in these constantly in NE Florida
Lanai / Screened Porch
Most NE Florida homes have a screened lanai or porch that functions as a living space. It needs its own section because it’s exposed to outdoor elements while still being considered part of the home.
- Sweep or vacuum all flooring — pavers, tile, or concrete
- Wipe down all outdoor furniture, cushions, and tables
- Clean screen panels — remove cobwebs, pollen buildup, and mildew
- Scrub any mold or algae on the ceiling, especially in corners and along the roofline
- Clean ceiling fan (lanai fans collect grime faster than interior fans)
- Wipe light fixtures and any wall-mounted decor
- Clean sliding glass door exterior and track from the lanai side
- Check for standing water or debris in any planters or drains
Florida-Specific Items Most People Miss
These don’t fit neatly into one room but are critical in Northeast Florida homes:
- AC drip pan and drain line: Flush the condensate drain line with vinegar or a cleaning solution. Clogged drain lines cause water damage and are the number-one service call for Florida HVAC techs.
- Dehumidifier maintenance: If you run a standalone dehumidifier, empty, clean, and inspect it. Dirty reservoirs breed mold.
- Air filter replacement: Swap the HVAC filter. In Florida, where the AC runs nearly year-round, filters should be changed every 30–60 days. A deep clean is the right time to do it.
- Entry point sand control: Vacuum and clean entryway rugs and mats thoroughly. Coastal sand grinds into tile and hardwood, causing micro-scratches over time. Consider upgrading to a higher-quality entry mat if yours isn’t catching sand effectively.
- Garage floor: Sweep and hose down the garage floor. Garages in NE Florida collect sand, leaves, and moisture. Check corners for mold or mildew.
- Interior door thresholds: Wipe and inspect thresholds between rooms, especially where carpet meets tile. Humidity-driven expansion can shift thresholds and create gaps where dirt hides.
How Often Should You Deep Clean?
For most NE Florida homes, a full deep clean every 3–4 months keeps things under control. Homes near the coast, with pets, or with heavy foot traffic may need it quarterly. At a minimum, every home should get at least two deep cleans per year — spring and fall.
Regular maintenance cleaning (weekly or biweekly) handles surface-level upkeep. Deep cleaning tackles the buildup that maintenance cleaning doesn’t reach: inside cabinets, behind appliances, grout lines, vents, and all the spots where Florida’s humidity does its quiet damage.
